The Hernia

May 27, 2020

Warming players up on Tim Hortons field Hamilton Ontario I feel some tension and pressure in my right hip flexor/groin, nothing much to worry about will get the team doc to check it out. Fast forward a week I am home with flu coughing my guts up or in this case out… A reduceable lump roughly half the size of a tennis ball, doc confirms this is most certainly a hernia, hooray. Hip extension with any load is now out of the questions as is any meaningful bracing, that’s powerlifting sacked off then. Planned Bilateral movements were now in and any spontaneous movement was out.

Finding out what I could and couldn’t do was not a fun process the list for couldn’t was much longer, I did find out that I could pretty much brutalize arms and grip with no ill effect to the hernia! Now I had an idea I could develop a goal to fill my time until the surgery, to barbell curl my body weight. This was huge in not letting me really get down with the current situation, I now had something to aim towards.

I never did reach my curl goal but I made significant progress towards it and gained over and inch on my arms. Thank fully surgery came swiftly considering a pandemic (7 months) so I sit here in quite some discomfort rambling on. Rehab has begun.
